Do I Really Need a Wedding Planner?
The Honest Truth + How to Choose
Planning a wedding is beautiful, magical, and (let’s be honest) a never-ending to-do list. A question almost every couple runs into when they start the planning process is: Do I really need a wedding planner, or can I pull this off myself?
The short answer? It depends on your budget, your free time, and your stress tolerance. To help you decide, I’ve broken down exactly what a planner brings to the table, along with a quick guide of the different tiers of planning services commonly available so you only pay for what you actually need.
You likely NEED a wedding planner if:
You and your partner work full-time jobs and have less than 10 hours a week to dedicate to planning your wedding
You are planning a destination wedding or a multi-day event (check out some of my past destination weddings here)
You have a complex vision but zero experience negotiating vendor contracts
You want to actually enjoy your wedding day without worrying about why the florist is 30 minutes late
You can probably DIY it if:
You are having a very intimate micro-wedding or elopement
You are naturally hyper-organized, love spreadsheets, and have a long timeline (12+ months)
You are on a strict budget where every dollar must go directly to food, venue, and photography
Understanding the Tiers: Full vs Partial vs Day-of Coordination
If you do decide you want backup, wedding planners (including myself) often offer distinct tiers of service tailored to your needs.
Full-Service Planning
This is the most hands-on tier: when you hire me, I act as your project manager, creative director, and sounding board. We’ll have regular check-ins for updates, and I’m there with you through vendor contracts, budget planning, stationery design, and event mock-ups, all the way until the event comes to fruition.
Partial Planning
Partial planning is the perfect middle ground if you want to stay hands-on but with professional guidance along the way. You do the initial heavy lifting, and I help fill in some of the trickier vendor gaps to see the event through. This is a good tier if you already have specific vendors in mind, like your dream venue or a specific photographer.
Event Coordination
Sometimes labeled as “Day-of/Month-of Coordination”, this tier is for couples who have planned all the details and just want a professional to run the show. When I handle coordination, I usually step in about a month before the big day to review your contracts, build and send out the master timeline, and run your rehearsal. On your wedding day, I make sure everything is running smoothly and on time so that you actually get to enjoy your party.
The Bottom Line
You don’t necessarily need a full-service planner to have a flawless wedding, but almost every couple needs at least an Event Coordinator. Investing in professional support ensures your investment into your venue, food, and entertainment actually pays off because the day runs seamlessly.
